I am a self-taught artist living in Colorado and working primarily in watermedia and pastel, however I also dabble in polymer clay and oil. I have been displaying work in a gallery for about a year and have been participating in juried shows.
I continue to push myself and grow in my knowledge of different techniques and media. I believe this is what it means to be an artist. I am someone who can never stop learning and needs the adventure of the unknown - elements that the artistic side to life provides with great ease.
The first medium I chose to study was watercolor. Many will say this was probably the most difficult medium to begin with, but I think that it has allowed me to become extremely flexible in my approach to a painting. Indeed, I never attack a painting the same way!
Because I do not have a process in the traditional sense, my paintings actually begin with my becoming open to the possibility of an inspiring moment. Often, I have no clue what I will paint next, whether a steel rod, a fish, or a daffodil. I usually need to run or walk one of my crazy dogs around a lake and then see what happens. Sometimes after that, a certain song will play and I will see a painting start in my mind. Other times, nothing. It really depends. I don't wait around for inspiration to happen though - I actively seek it out. It is my job.
